The Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, established by Kobo Daishi (Kukai), links 88 temples across Shikoku’s four prefectures. The full 1,200 km route takes around 40–60 days to complete on foot. Each temple represents a stage of spiritual growth—from awakening and discipline to nirvana. Modern pilgrims may complete sections by bus or car. The traditional attire—white robe, sedge hat, and walking staff—symbolizes purity and devotion. More than a religious act, the pilgrimage offers a journey of self-reflection and mindfulness, attracting both Japanese and international travelers.
